Rebels 6 Ice 1

CRANBROOK, B.C. — After struggling the past three games to score goal despite wracking up the shots on net, the Red Deer Rebels broke through in a big way Saturday night with a 6-1 win over the Kootenay Ice.

Leading the way for the Rebels was forward Matt Ferguson with two goals and two assists and a huge plus-5 rating.

But first it was Alex Petrovic who got the show going for the Rebels 4:51 into the game with his fifth goal of the season from Colin Archer and John Perrson. Ferguson then scored his ninth and 10th goals of the year 4:01 apart mid way through the opening frame. Matt Dumba picked up a helper on Ferguson’s first goal and Turner Elson one on his second.

Thanks to four penalties, the Rebels spent most of the second period on the defensive and got out shot 8-4 in the process. But the final 20 minutes belonged to the Rebels as they scored three more times.

Dumba continued his stellar freshman campaign with his 10th goal of the season at 10:41 of the final period from Ferguson and Archer and Justin Weller continued Rebels’ the onslaught with his fourth of the year from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Andrej Kudrna at 15:47.

Kootenay finally stopped the bleeding and broke Darcy Kuemper’s shutout on the power play at 16:55 of the third as Hayden Rintoul scored his seventh of the season.

Locke Muller iced the game with his second goal from Ferguson at 16:48.

Kuemper (25-8-1-2) finished the game with 22 saves while Nathan Lieuwen (18-9-1-1) was in for all six goals against on just 19 shots to take the loss.

The Rebels (25-12-1-4) are back on the ice on Wednesday in Moose Jaw (25-15-0-2) at 8 p.m. to kick off a five east road swing.
