Rebels Carson Birnie named Central Division Scholastic Player of the Year

He’s is also a nominee for the WHL award

Red Deer Rebels Carson Birnie has been rewarded for his work in the classroom.

On Thursday afternoon the Western Hockey League (WHL) announced Birnie is one of four nominees up for the Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Memorial Trophy.

The trophy is awarded to the WHL’s Scholastic Player of the Year and the winner will be announced on Monday, May 8.

Among the nominees are players from each division with Birnie being named the Central Division’s Scholastic Player of the Year. Last weekend Birnie was also announced as the Rebels Scholastic Player of the year.

The Rebels rookie from Arcola, Sask. has managed to find success on the ice contributing eight goals and seven assists while also focusing on his Grade 12 studies.

On the ice, the 18-year-old led all Rebels’ rookies in scoring but in his core subjects, Birnie had an overall average of 92 per cent.

This included a 95 per cent grade in Chemistry 30, 95 per cent in English Language Arts 30, and 90 per cent in Math Foundations 30.
