Rebels 4 Broncos 3
The Red Deer Rebels continue to chase down franchise history.
Saturday, the Rebels inched closer to a historic mark, tying the 2000-2001 Rebels for the most wins to start a season with seven, after a 4-3 victory over the Swift Current Broncos on the road.
The Rebels trailed twice in the game but fought their way back both times to come out on top.
Just under seven minutes into the opening frame the Broncos took a 2-0 lead off the sticks of forwards Caleb Wyrostok and Josh Filmon.
However, the Rebels began to chip away at the deficit at the midway point of the period when Jhett Larson scored his sixth of the year off a nice feed from Ben King.
In the second period, the Rebels tied it up 2at two on a tip out front by forward Ollie Josephson for his first of the season. No one else scored in the middle frame despite a total of 23 shots from both sides.
However, the Broncos regained their lead just over seven minutes into the third period off a shot by Raphael Pelletier.
The Rebels fired as many shots on net as they could in the final frame with 17 shots in the period alone until defenceman Matteo Fabrizi tied the game 3-3 on his first tally this season.
With roughly two and a half minutes remaining in the game, forward Kai Uchacz hammered in the game-winning goal off a pass from Christoffer Sedoff for his sixth goal.
A strength for the Rebels this season has been their special teams but on Saturday night they struggled, at least on the offensive side. Red Deer were unsuccessful on all five of their powerplays but on the flip side were strong on the penalty kill and held the Broncos to just one powerplay goal on four attempts.
Rebels goaltender Kyle Kelsey was fantastic once again and made 27 saves in the win. Red Deer swept their Saskatchewan road trip and will return back home for a Wednesday night tilt against the Calgary Hitmen at 7 p.m.
