Red Deer athletes win gold at Canada Cup

The Lindsay Thurber Raiders senior boys volleyball team won the 4A central zone championship earlier in the year.

Red Deer's Tyson DeZutter helped lead Team Alberta volleyball to a gold medal finish at the 2024 Canada Cup.

They defeated the Saskatchewan Green Selects 3-0 in the championship final at the Tsuut'ina Nation on Sunday which solidified an undefeated tournament.

The tournament took place from July 24-28 in Alberta featuring the top male and female players from across Canada.

DeZutter and Team Alberta went 3-0 in round-robin play defeating Nova Scotia, Manitoba, and Ontario. They went on to defeat that same Manitoba team 3-1 in the quarterfinals and Team B.C. 3-0 in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Red Deer's Chloe Penz and Jorgie Cornish won gold with Team Alberta knocking off Canada White 3-1 in the final.

They went the distance beating Ontario, and  Quebec, but losing to Canada Red in round-robin play. They took down the B.C. Selects 3-2 in the quarterfinals before winning 3-1 over Saskatchewan in the semifinals.
