Red Deer brings home haul of medals from Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games

Red Deer athletes made their mark during the Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games over the weekend.

From Feb. 24-26, 52 athletes, coaches, and support staff made their way to Strathcona County to compete against 600 of the best in the province as well as in Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories.

Red Deer athletes competed in curling, floor hockey, five-pin bowling, and speed skating.

Special Olympics Red Deer athletes medaled in every event and brought home a record 14 medals. The medals won include a gold and silver in curling, silver in floor hockey, bronze in bowling, three gold in speed skating, and two silver, five medals (two silver, three bronze) in individual bowling.

Next up is the Special Olympics National Games to be held in Calgary next year. Team Alberta will be formed ahead of time and is set to be announced in April.

After that Team Canada will compete in the World Games in Italy in 2025.
