The Red Deer Golf and Country Club are ready to host some of the province’s best golfers during the upcoming 100th Central Alberta Amateur this weekend.

Beginning on Saturday and ending Monday, 155 golfers will take part in one of Red Deer Golf and Country Club’s biggest tournaments of the summer.

The head professional at the Red Deer Golf and Country Club Dean Manz said it’s fun to be a part of the longest-standing three-day amateur event in Alberta.

“There’s no question this is one of our flagship events at the club and historically speaking we always get nice weather … I think it’s one of those events where members and guests circle it on their calendars so they can come back every year,” Manz said.

The majority of those competing are from Alberta but also have been lucky enough to attract some from outside the province.

“There’s going to be a lot of great golf played this weekend and we’re excited to host them all,” he added. “Usually whoever wins the Central Alberta Amateur is a well-known golfer and with Red Deer Golf and Country Club a lot of our members are great players and it’s definitely a players club. Winning this title is a big feather in somebody’s cap when they capture the title, no question.”

One of the reasons Manz said the competition has been around for so long is it’s a great event, the spirit of competition, socializing, and camraderie.

They feel lucky it’s been going on for so long and Manz said the last two years during the COVID-19 pandemic they were able to continue the tournament with no pause.

The defending champion of the tournament is Mike McAdam who has one the Central Alberta Amateur three times in 2016, 2018, and 2021.
