Red Deer Optimist Chiefs advance to Midget AAA playoffs Tuesday

The Red Deer Optimist Chiefs picked up a victory to finish the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League season.

With the 3-1 win over the Calgary Buffaloes Friday, the Optimist Chiefs wrapped up third in the Chrysler Division. Tyler MacKenzie had a pair of goals in the win and Kyle Wallace added two assists.

Red Deer will kick off its AMHL first-round, best-of-five playoff series Tuesday at Servus Arena against the Calgary Northstars. Puck drop is 7:15 p.m. Game 3 of the series is 4:45 p.m. on Feb. 22 at Servus Arena.

The last time the two teams played on Jan. 9, Red Deer earned a 5-4 win. In their only other meeting of the season, the Optimist Chiefs shutout the Calgary Northstars 5-0.

Optimist Chiefs forward Jayden Henderson finished third in AMHL scoring in the regular season with 18 goals and 36 assists in 32 games. Red Deer goalie Logan Breen was fifth in save percentage with a 2.17 mark and was also fifth in save percentage 0.927. Colby Knight had a 2.33 GAA and a 0.914 SV%.
