Red Deer Optimist Chiefs dominant in pair of wins

The Red Deer Optimist Chiefs rolled on the weekend in Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League play.

Red Deer trounced the SSAC Athletics 9-0 on Saturday, then followed that up with a 4-2 victory over the Sherwood Park Kings on Sunday.

In the 9-0 win, a trio of Optimist Chiefs had four-point nights. Deegan Mofford had a natural hat trick and an assist, Tye Carriere had a goal and three assists and Daylan Kuefler had a pair of goals and two assists. Tanner Scott, Josh McNeil and Ryan McBeath also had tallies in the win. Hunter Leslie also chipped in two assists.

Kyle Budvarson opened the scoring in the 4-2 win over Sherwood Park, before McBeath added another second-period marker on the power play. In the third, Mofford and Brett Meerman had goals to close out the victory.

Bretton Park made 25 saves to earn the win.

The Optimist Chiefs need just one point in their final four games to clinch a first round bye in the playoffs.

Bantam AAA

The Red Deer Rebels picked up four points in a pair of weekend road games.

Red Deer topped the Airdrie Xtreme 5-3 on Saturday and then shutout the Okotoks Oilers 3-0 Sunday.

Myles Hilman notched a pair of goals in the win Saturday, while Zachery Burns, Jayden Henderson and Austin Mayert each added a goal. Colby Knight made 25 stops to earn the victory.

With 27 saves Sunday, Joshua Hilts picked up the shutout over Okotoks. Kaiden Wedderburn scored twice and Mayert also added a goal.

Midget AAA Female

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs dropped a pair of games on the road this weekend.

Aryn Chambers had the only goal for Red Deer in a 2-1 loss to St. Albert and Chiefs goalie Chantelle Sandquist turned aside 23 shots.

Red Deer dropped a tough 2-1 game to the Edmonton Pandas on Sunday. Stephanie Keeper had the only Red Deer goal.
