Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, Queens Basketball gear up for playoffs

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens basketball teams wrapped up their regular seasons this past weekend.

After a 87-81 loss to the Ambrose Lions on the road Friday, the Kings bounced back to beat the Lions 95-78 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre Saturday.

Graduating student-athlete Tyronn King has 23 points in Friday’s loss and 13 points in Saturday’s win. The fifth-year led the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference this season with 24.6 points-per-game.

The third-place Kings (9-7) will host the sixth-place Briercrest College Clippers in a division quarter-final this Friday.

Meanwhile, the Queens were downed 69-62 by the Lions Friday. But RDP defeated the same team 83-74 at home the following day.

In Saturday’s win, RDP’s Lauren France scored a game high 25 points. The first-year Bachelor of Arts Psychology student went seven-for-17 from three-point range.

The fifth-seed Queens (7-9) will travel to Medicine Hat College to play the fourth-place Rattlers (8-8) in a division quarter-final Friday.

Kings Hockey defeated the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings 5-4 in double-overtime Friday night. Hayden Clayton scored the gamewinner for RDP. Jacob Kendall scored twice, while Tucker Scantlebury and Chance Longjohn potted one each.

The Vikings edged RDP 4-3 the following day. Clayton, Scantlebury and Mathieu Lapointe scored for the Kings.

The third-place Kings (9-4-2-1) will host the sixth-place Clippers (3-12-1-0) in a best-of-three quarter-final series beginning Friday.

Queens Hockey also split its two games this past weekend.

Despite outshooting the SAIT Trojans 54-17, RDP was defeated 2-1 in a shootout Friday night at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. Brenna Reid scored the Queens’ lone goal.

The Queens topped the Trojans 6-1 Saturday, thanks to two goals from Monica Bowtell and 12 saves from goaltender Madison Fox. Natalie Buttle, Mary Hirsch, Alli Soyko and Madison Sansom also scored for RDP.
