The RDP Queens track team started 2023 with a bang.

At the Kinsmen Sports Centre in Edmonton, the Queens won gold in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association Running Room Grand Prix 1, with 72 points, well ahead of SAIT, who finished second with 40. The Kings earned silver with 60 points, behind only the Lethbridge College Kodiaks.

Jenica Swartz led the way for the Queens with gold in the 1000-metre race, in a time of 3:10.92. Swartz and the Queens also won gold in the 4x200m relay, and silver in the 4x400m relay. RDP’s Myah Cota was able to maintain a solid pace in the women’s 3000m event finishing with a time of 12:21.48 to capture the victory. Justine Larson earned silver in the 1500m and Kammy Park won bronze in the 300m.

On the men’s side, Ethan Duret captured gold in the 600m, in a time of 1:26.79. Kings runner Daniel Szucs picked up bronze in both the 1500m and 3000m races. The Kings captured silver in the 4x200m relay and bronze in the 4x400m race.

“The most encouraging thing from the coaches’ standpoint is that, in post-meet discussions with each athlete, they indicated their commitment to redoubling their training efforts in order to continue to improve,” said RDP cross country and track and field coach Doug Spicer.

RDP will play host to Running Room Grand Prix 2 on February 18.
