Red Deer Polytechnic Queens stay undefeated after sweep of Briercrest

The RDP Queens are a perfect 12-0 in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference volleyball action this year.

The Queens kept the perfect record alive this weekend with a pair of victories over the Briercrest College Clippers at home and they have now only dropped two sets all year.

One of those came Friday when they needed four sets (25-20,25-23, 15-25, 25-15) to take down the Clippers. Tess Pearman led the way for the Queens with match-high 16 kills, as well as one ace and one stuff block. Jaiden Ferguson chipped in 12 kills and two aces, while Anna Carlson had 10 kills. Queens second-year setter Emma Letkeman had 34 assists and three aces in the win.

Saturday, the Queens picked up a three-set sweep (25-17, 25-16, 25-19) of the Clippers. In the win, Ferguson led the Queens with 13 kills and three aces, while Pearman chipped in 11 kills and three aces. Letkeman finished the afternoon with 37 assists Saturday.

The Queens next face off against the SAIT Trojans in Calgary on Thursday.

The RDP Kings split their weekend series with the Clippers.

After a five-set win (22-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-23, 15-10) on Friday, the Kings lost in five Saturday (21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 24-26, 9-15).

In Saturday’s loss, the Kings has a chance to close out the match with game point in the fourth set, but ultimately lost 26-24.

Red Deer’s Brett Lower was the Kings’ main source of offence with a match-high 25 kills and he earned player of the game honours. Nicholas Possingham chipped in 15 kills and Dante Furlan had 12 in the loss.

In Friday’s win, Lower had 26 kills, while Possingham added 15 and Furlan contributed 10.

The Kings were missing five players on the weekend due to COVID-19 protocols.
