The Red Deer Rebels will have a new look back end for the 2022-23 WHL season.

Red Deer sent 19-year-old defenceman Kyle Masters to the Kamloops Blazers and a conditional first-round 2025 WHL Prospect Draft selection in exchange for blueliner Mats Lindgren. Lindgren, 18, recorded five goals and 44 assists in 68 games for the Blazers last year. The defenceman is a product of North Vancouver, B.C., but also holds Swedish citizenship. He was selected by Kamloops in the first round, seventh overall at the 2019 WHL Prospects Draft and in the fourth round, 107th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Masters was drafted by the Rebels 16th overall in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft and has played 109 games in a Rebels uniform. He was drafted in the fourth round, 118th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft by the Minnesota Wild. The six-foot, 176-pound defender posted 14 points in 65 games last year.
