Rebels 5 Hitmen 1

Arshdeep Bains scored twice as the Red Deer Rebels topped the Calgary Hitmen 5-1 Saturday night in exhibition play.

The Western Hockey League preseason game was played at the Siksika Deerfoot Sportsplex on Siksika Nation, west of Calgary.

This was Red Deer’s second straight win over Calgary in as many nights – the Rebels topped the Hitmen at the Peavey Mart Centrium 3-0 Friday night.

Calgary’s Tristan Zandee got the scoring started on Saturday, beating Rebels goaltender Justen Maric 6:13 into the first period. That was the only time the Hitmen were able to get the puck past Maric, who finished the game with 22 saves on 23 shots.

Bains tied the game up 13:44 into the first frame. Dallon Melin picked up the next Rebels goal 17:24 into the opening period.

Carter Anderson and Bains added power play goals for the Rebels late in the second period and early in the third period, respectively. Ethan Rowland scored the final goal 6:35 into the third period, giving the Rebels a 5-1 victory.

Red Deer went 2/4 on the power play and outshot the Hitmen 39-23 overall.

The Rebels will finish exhibition play with a home-and-home series against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The two teams will face off in Lethbridge Friday and at the Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer Saturday.

Red Deer will open the WHL regular season Oct. 1 in Edmonton before hosting the Oil Kings the following evening.
