Lethbridge 4 Red Deer 3 (OT)

A late penalty cost the Red Deer Rebels, as they lost in overtime to the Lethbridge Hurricanes Saturday.

Alex Cotton scored the overtime winner for Lethbridge on the powerplay as the Rebels dropped to 1-3-2 to start the 2021-22 Western Hockey League season.

Lethbridge’s Justin Hall scored the first goal of the game 4:03 into the opening frame.

Less than a minute later, Red Deer’s Jace Isley tied the game with an unassisted marker. The Rebels took the lead thanks to Josh Tarzwell’s powerplay goal, assisted by Chris Douglas and Kyle Masters, 15:51 into the first frame.

Ben King added to the Rebels’ lead by scoring another powerplay goal 6:17 into the second period. Masters and Zak Smith picked up the assists.

Unfortunately for Red Deer, Lethbridge scored twice on the powerplay before the end of the period – Alex Thacker made the game 3-2 and then Hall scored his second to tie the game.

No one was able to score in the third period, but less than a minute into overtime, Cotton was able to get the puck past Ethan Anders. The game-winner was Lethbridge’s third powerplay goal of the game – the Hurricanes went three for four on the man advantage and Red Deer went two for five.

Anders stopped 26 of 30 shots in the Red Deer net, while Carl Tetachuk stopped 22 of 25.

The Rebels will host the Hurricanes at the Westerner Park Centrium Sunday at 6 p.m.
