The Red Deer Rebels signed Luke Vlooswyk, their first-round selection in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft, to a Standard Player Agreement on Wednesday.

The 2007-born defenceman was selected 17th overall from the U15 AAA Calgary Bisons.

“Luke is a long, athletic two-way defenceman who kills plays defensively with his reach and mobility while being hard to play against,” said Associate General Manager Shaun Sutter in a media release. “Luke can skate and push the play up ice quickly with good exit plays. He possesses natural leadership qualities, so we feel there is a high ceiling to his game as he grows into his big body and fills out.”

During the 2021-22 campaign with the Bisons, Vlooswyk appeared in 33 games contributing 25 points and eight goals. He also added 34 penalty minutes. In the playoffs, he had two goals and seven assists.

Shortly after the Rebels announced the signing on Wednesday, Vlooswyk reflected on his excitement on Twitter.

“So excited to sign with the Red Deer Rebels! I can’t thank everyone enough who has helped me get here. My family, friends, teammates, coaches, trainers, and everyone else along the way. This is only the beginning,” he said in the tweet.
