A low-scoring affair and a tense battle meant some extra lacrosse Saturday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League Tier-II action Saturday.

After a back and forth contest that was tied at four through regulation, Renegades goaltender Eric Warner made some massive saves before Red Deer knocked off the Lloydminster Xtreme 5-4.

“I thought defensively we did well. Our goalie played off his head and offensively we have a lot to work on,” said head coach of the Renegades Mike Clark.

“This Xtreme team is one of the stronger ones in the league and they were a little shorthanded today so I mean they probably didn’t play as well as they wanted to.”

It was an important win for the third-place Renegades as they trail the second-place Xtreme in the North standings. With the win, they improved to 4-2.

The Xtreme severely outshot the renegades 52-27 making Red Deer earn their scoring chances. Warner came up clutch for the home side.

“Honestly he was easily the best player on the floor tonight. Can’t say more about him other than that he’s the reason we walked out of here tonight without an ‘L’ in the column,” Clark added.

In the first period, the Renegades jumped out to a 2-0 lead, with goals from Koden Stott and Alex Pennycook, before the Xtreme came back to tie it with two quick goals at the end of the opening frame.

Lloydminster scored five minutes into the second period with Red Deer responding with a goal of their own a minute later.

Towards the end of the middle frame, a short scuffle led to a four-on-three powerplay. The penalty carried into the third when the Renegades took a 4-3 lead on a goal from Avery Weik. Seven minutes later the Xtreme tied it up before going to overtime.

Net up for the Renegades in a home game next weekend against the Lakeland Heat on Saturday.

Red Deer’s Junior B Tier I team, the Rampage were also in action this weekend losing to the Saskatchewan SWAT 12-11 Friday night. The Rampage also fell to the Fort Saskatchewan Rebels 16-10 on Saturday night.
