Red Deer Riggers earn win in home opener

The Red Deer Riggers picked up their first victory at home on the Sunburst League season Tuesday night.

Red Deer knocked off the St. Albert Tigers 4-2 at Gulls Stadium in Sylvan Lake, with the middle of the Riggers lineup coming up big.

Designated Hitter Josh Edwards led the way with two hits and two RBI, while four-hitter Jason Louis also had two hits a lone RBI. Gavin Fraser, hitting second in the order also had two hits and a pair of RBI. Riggers centre fielder Justin Reay also had two hits for the home side.

Rees DeRuyter had a strong start on the mound to earn the victory. The young hurler tossed four innings, with four strikeouts, three hits, two earned runs and one walk.

Veteran pitcher Davin Gulbransen closed out the game, going three innings, allowing just three hits while striking out three.

Monday night, the Riggers fell 10-2 to the Sherwood Park Athletics.

Sherwood Park put up six runs in the fourth inning and the Riggers made six errors on the way to the loss.

Gavin Fraser cashed the lone Riggers’ runs with a two-RBI double in the third innings. James Fischer threw five innings for the A’s and struck out six batters, while only walking three.
