Red Deer Riggers fall to Rockies in pitchers’ duel

Rockies hold Riggers to just three hits

It came down to the wire but the Red Deer Riggers were unable to solve the Calgary Rockies in Sunburst League action.

On Tuesday night at Great Chief Park the Rockies went up 2-0 in the first inning and that would be all they needed to beat the home squad.

The Riggers added a run in the sixth inning cashed in by Corbyn Shields but despite that, the Riggers were unable to solve an elite pitching performance by Calgary. The Rockies held on to a 2-1 victory and with the loss, the Riggers are 6-4 on the season.

Rockies pitcher Curtis Smith held the Riggers to just three hits and struck out 14 batters in a pitchers’ duel in Red Deer. Jaret Chatwood, Josh Edwards, and Mason Love-Hollman all registered a hit.

Riggers Josh Edwards allowed two runs on four hits in five innings of work but struck out five.

Davin Gulbransen and Dustin Northcott came into the game in relief in the sixth and seventh inning and held the Rockies to no runs. Gulbransen gave up a hit meanwhile Northcott struck out three in the final inning.

The Riggers will be back in action on Thursday in a rematch against the Rockies in Calgary at 7:30 p.m. at the Webber Academy Athletic Park.
