Red Deer Riggers move into first place with win over Rockies

Riggers win 12-6 on the road

The Red Deer Riggers have moved into first place in the south division after a 12-6 win over the Calgary Rockies.

The Riggers improve to 8-5 on the year and win the regular season series over the Rockies 3-2 on Thursday night in Calgary.

Red Deer was a well-oiled machine in the batter’s box recording 16 hits and 11 RBIs.

The Riggers tied the game at the top of the second 1-1 and added another run in the third inning. However, the Rockies came back swinging in the third notching two runs and another in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.

In the final three innings the Riggers’ bats came alive scoring three in the fifth, two in the sixth, and five in the final inning.

Centrefielder Derek Chapman did the most damage at the plate hammering home three RBIs and hitting two for five.

Second baseman Corbyn Shields and catcher Kyle Belich were close behind with two RBIs each. Shields had three hits on five at bats and Belich had a hit on two at-bats.

Mason Love-Hollman also saw success notching three hits on four visits to the plate and right fielder Jason Louis went two for four.

The Rockies also did some damage at the plate knocking in six RBIs including a home run by catcher Luke Wilson.

Riggers starting pitcher Davin Gulbransen gave up four runs and six hits through four innings and struck out one. Matthew Murray came in the fifth inning in relief and allowed two runs on two hits through one and two-thirds of an inning. He also struck out a batter.

Kai Poffenroth closed out the game for the Riggers in the final inning and struck out one.

Rockies starting pitcher Andrew Grieder pitched three innings and allowed two runs before getting pulled in the fourth. Calgary went through five pitchers in the loss.

Next up for the Riggers is a matchup with the Edmonton Padres on Tuesday, July 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Gulls Stadium in Sylvan Lake.
