Red Deer Riggers walk off Edmonton, move into first place

The Red Deer Riggers moved into first place in the Sunburst League after defeating the Edmonton Cubs Tuesday evening in Sylvan Lake.

Red Deer jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the third inning but gave up a run in the fifth and sixth inning before falling behind 3-2 heading into the final frame.

The Riggers scored two runs in the seventh inning to win in walk-off fashion and earn a tight victory against their longtime rival.

Rookie Justin Reay won player of the game with two stolen bases and a triple in the seventh inning. Josh Edwards and Jay Kirkham each had an RBI in the victory. Miles Love-Hollman also chipped in two hits and a steal for the Riggers.

Pitcher Kai Poffenroth took home the win after closing the game out and contributing a strikeout. Meanwhile, Rees DeRuyter pitched 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and Davin Gulbransen pitched two innings with two strikeouts.

Next up for the Riggers is a match-up with the Tigers in St. Albert on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
