Red Deer teams captured five gold and four silver in the annual Friends On Ice ringette tournament during the weekend.
There were two all-Red Deer finals as the Kraze downed the Ice Twisters 7-6 in the petite C division and the Extreme beat the Ice Hawks 7-3 in the novice championship.
The Kraze reached the final by downing the St. Albert Chix with Stix 7-6 and Calgary Blizzards 16-0 and losing 7-1 to the Ice Twisters, who also beat the Blizzards 15-1 and tied St. Albert 3-3.
The Extreme reached the novice final with a 3-2 win over the Red Deer Blizzard in the semifinal while the Ice Hawks stopped the Medicine Hat Rush 6-4.
Both the Extreme and Ice Hawks were 3-0 in preliminary play.
The Red Deer Rave captured the tween B title with a 3-2 win over the St. Albert Pazzaz while the Red Deer Rush took the tween A crown, beating the Spruce Grove Bounce 5-2.
The Rave downed the Airdrie Nitro 9-1 and the Red Deer Edge 3-2 and tied St. Albert 1-1 in round-robin action.
The Rush stopped the Strathmore Ice Sisters 9-1, the Lethbridge Hurricanes 10-2 and the Bounce 8-2 in preliminary play.
The Red Deer Confusion won gold with an 8-7 win over the Spruce Grove Parkland TriCatz in the master’s division.
The Confusion downed Mustang Sally 8-5 and the Calgary Ice Breakers 9-6 and lost 5-1 to the TriCatz in pool play.
The petite B division saw the St. Albert Luna Chix down the Red Deer Bling 7-1 in the final.
The Bling beat the Fort McMurray Frostbite 10-2 and the Airdrie Whiteout 7-4 and tied the Luna Chix 2-2 in round-robin play.
Red Deer’s other silver came in the petite A category where the Earthquake lost 7-3 to the Lacombe Oxygen.
The Oxygen lost 8-7 to the Earthquake in pool play, but downed the Beaumont Excel 5-1 and the Lethbridge Blades 13-2.
The Earthquake beat both the Blades and Beaumont 9-1.
The open B division final saw the Calgary Gladiators down the Central Alberta TBS Power 7-2.
In pool play the Power beat the Calgary Defiance 8-6 and the Riviere Quibarre Twisters 4-2 and lost 8-5 to the Gladiators.
Meanwhile the Airdrie Impact downed the Fort McMurray Rush 8-2 in the junior B final, the Spruce Grove Elite edged the Calgary North Threat 5-4 in the junior A division final and the Calgary Viva stopped the St. Albert Instinct 5-3 to take the belle title.
