Hockey Alberta has announced for the second year in a row Red Deer will host the Spring Showcase in 2023.
In April and May in the new year, three weeks’ worth of hockey will be played at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on the Red Deer Polytechnic campus. Throughout the two-month span, Red Deer will host the Alberta Cup from April 26-30, Alberta Challenge from May 3-7, and the Prospects Cup from May 10-14.
The Alberta Cup features 2008-born male players and is an opportunity for those players to show what they can do on the ice. They can also earn an invite to the U16 Team Alberta Summer Camp to present their talents to potentially represent the province in the 2023 WHL Cup. Prior to the cup, regional camps will be held from March 31 – April 2, 2023, in Calgary, Red Deer, and Spruce Grove.
The Alberta Challenge and Prospects Cup is the first step for players entering the Team Alberta program. The Alberta Challenge is for 2008 and 2009-born female players and regional camps will run April 7-9 in Beaumont and Cochrane. Meanwhile, the Prospects Camp is for 2010-born male players and regional camps will run April 14-16, 2023 in Calgary, Edmonton, Olds, and Vegreville.
Red Deer hosted all three cups in 2022 for the first time after they were canceled in 2020 and 2021. In 2019, Red Deer Polytechnic hosted the Alberta Cup.
