Red Deer is set to play host to a major curling event in 2024.
In a short announcement Tuesday, Red Deer’s Servus Arena was named the host site for the 2024 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling Co-op Canadian Open.
The event will take place from Jan. 16-21.
Traditionally, the event features 16 of the top men’s teams and 16 of the top women’s teams from around the globe.
It incorporates a unique triple knockout preliminary round where teams must win three games before they lose three games in order to advance to the playoffs.
Calgary’s own Team Bottcher is the reigning men’s champions after going undefeated through this year’s event in front of family, friends and fans in Camrose in January.
Meanwhile, Team Fujisawa from Japan, who also posted a perfect 6-0 record en route to the women’s championship, made history as they became the first Asian-based club to win a title in the series.
Ticket information will be available in the near future.
