The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs are rolling in their first games of the 2023 Alberta Female Hockey League U18 AA Provincial Championship in Leduc.

They’ve started the tournament undefeated with a record of 2-0 with two games remaining before the medal games on Sunday.

Their most recent victory came against the Edmonton Pandas 5-4 in the shootout on Friday.

After the Pandas scored the lone goal in the first period, both teams were firing on all cylinders in the second period scoring seven goals.

Red Deer’s Karly Currie got the equalizer 20 seconds into the middle frame but Edmonton scored the next two to take a 3-1 lead midway through the period.

However, late in the period, Red Deer notched three straight tallies scored by Devon McConnell, Karlee Feragen, and Blair Morley. With under a minute left Edmonton tied the game at four to send it to overtime.

No one would find the back of the net in the extra frame but in the shootout forward Emily Lemke scored the only goal to win the game.

Goaltender MacKenzie Gould-Sharpe stopped all three shooters in the shootout and made 20 saves. She came into the game in the second period for Megan Graham after the coaching staff made a goalie change.

In their first game on Thursday, the Chiefs came out with a 2-1 win over Calgary Fire Red.

Feragen scored in the first period before the Fire found the equalizer late in the second.

With just under five minutes left in the game, the Chiefs scored the game-winner off the stick of Malia Tetreault. Goaltender Gould-Sharpe was solid in the net making 30 saves in the effort.
