Red Deer’s Bennett Love earns top spot at MJT Mini Tour event

Bennett Love wrote a comeback story for the ages on the weekend.

The Red Deer product was crowned champion at his second consecutive Maple Leaf Junior Golf Mini Tour at McKenzie Meadows Golf Club in Calgary on Sunday.

Love, 8, shot 81 to beat Owen Witherden, 8, of Consort. Through nine holes, Witherden held a six-shot lead. Love clawed back and was even with Witherden heading to 18. On the final hole, Love made a clutch par to win the title.

Close to 90 boys and girls ages 12 and under competed at the event in six different divisions.

Red Deer’s Serin Girard was runner up in the girls 9-10 age group with an 87, two strokes back of winner Kali Yeske of Calgary. Raylee Denton of Red Deer was fifth in the category with a 101.
