Red Deer’s Raylee Denton and Bennett Love have earned themselves a spot in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Mini Tour National Championship next month.
The Red Deer golfers each won their respective division in the MJT Mini Tour at Innisfail Golf Club on July 13.
12-year-old Denton won the girls 11-12 division after a dominant tournament shooting 77. The next closest is Calgary’s Allison Chan who shot 91.
“It feels great to win my division because that has been my goal for a lot of years now. The par three I took double bogey on was surprisingly a highlight of the tournament, because I hit three bad shots in a row, but calmed down and managed to brush it off to think about my next shot,” said Denton in a media release.
Love, 11, won the boys 11-12 division after shooting 69, just three strokes ahead of Edmonton’s Jake Fairey. Love has also placed top three in four MJT Mini Tour tournaments this season.
“It’s really cool to win, it was tough being that close to first in the last tournaments but not getting there. A major highlight was hitting my six iron to four feet for an eagle on hole 13,” Love said.
Denton and Love will both play at the MJT Mini Tour National Championships at the Tsawwassen Springs Golf Course on August 24-25, in B.C.
Sylvan Lake’s Ain Lee won the girls’ under-eight division after she shot a 95.
“I feel very happy and proud, my highlights were getting a birdie and some pars. If something isn’t going to plan, I take some deep breaths and chew on something,” Lee said.
On August 3 the next stop of the MJT Mini Tour will be at Golfuture YYC in Calgary.
