Red Deer’s Luke Bast named to AJHL South Divison All-Rookie Team

Following a successful season with the Brooks Bandits of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, Red Deer product Luke Bast was honoured for his performance.

The 17-year-old was named to the Viterra South Division All-Rookie Team on Wednesday.

Bast, in his first season in the AJHL, was the fourth high scoring defenceman, notching eight goals and 23 assists in 57 games.

The five-foot-nine, 161-pound defender played his minor hockey in Red Deer and suited up in 2016-2017 for the Red Deer Midget AAA Optimist Chiefs. That year he was the top scoring defenceman in the Alberta Midget Hockey League with 32 points in 34 games.

Bast was selected by the Victoria Royals in the sixth round, 112th overall in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft.

Bandits teammate Simon Boyko (Mississauga, Ont.) was also named to the rookie team while captain Dennis Cesana (Providence, RI) was named 2017-18 Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) South All-League Team.

Brooks, the defending AJHL champions will host the Okotoks Oilers in the South Division best-of-seven-final starting Friday.
