Red Deer's Mitch Evanecz earns spot at PGA’s Canadian Open

SURREY, B.C. — Darren Wallace of Langley, B.C., and Brad Fritsch of Manotick, Ont., earned exemptions at the 2011 RBC Canadian Open after posting scores of 7-under 65 in Monday’s final qualifier.

Amateur Mitch Evanecz of Red Deer, and American Joshua Habig of also earned spots, beating amateur Ryan Terdik of Mt. Pleasant, Ont., in a one-hole playoff. The three golfers were tied at 5-under 67 through 18 holes.

The playoff, which was contested on Morgan Creek Golf Course’s 17th hole, saw Terdik’s second shot land in the environmental area, ultimately assuring both Evanecz and Habig a spot in the field.

This year’s Canadian Open will feature 17 Canadians in its field.
