Red Deer’s Nate Danielson selected ninth overall by Detroit Red Wings

From Red Deer to the motor city

Red Deer’s own Nate Danielson is headed to the National Hockey League.

On Wednesday evening he was selected ninth overall by the Detroit Red Wings at the 2023 NHL Entry Draft in Nashville.

The 18-year-old forward has played the last three seasons with the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings and was named captain prior to the 2022-23 season.

During that time he’s amassed 59 goals and 91 assists for 150 points in 145 games.

With the ninth overall selection, Danielson becomes the second-highest Red Deerian to be drafted that high since Glen Wesley was selected third overall by the Boston Bruins in 1987.

In the 2022-23 campaign, he played in all 68 regular season games contributing 33 goals and 45 assists for 78 points.

While in Red Deer, Danielson played two seasons for the U15 AAA Red Deer Rebels from 2017-2019 before playing the 2019-20 season for the Northern Alberta X-Treme Prep.

In the 2020-21 season, he suited up for the U18 AAA Red Deer Cheifs for five games before getting called up to play 24 games for the Wheat Kings.
