EDMONTON — Losing is something the Red Deer Renegades have been frustratingly familiar with over the past couple of Alberta Major Women’s Soccer League seasons, but few defeats could match the disappointment of Saturday’s 1-0 setback to the undefeated North West United on Saturday.
The Renegades outplayed the first place United for most of the game, especially in the second half, but could not burry their opportunities. The one goal they surrendered came off a corner kick at the 34 minute mark, a play coach Vic Michalchuk says they should have defended better.
Standout U-16 goaltender Lauren Good, made the initial save, but the Renegades failed to clear and the United put it home.
“No one cleared the rebound,” he said.
“It was just one mistake and it cost us.”
Michalchuk was proud of the effort from his team which continues to play with a group of young players and other veterans playing different roles like Steph Thurston who had an impressive game despite playing out of position at centre-mid field. He adds that this is a game they can build off of.
“There were no heads hanging at the end of the game,” said Michalchuk.
The Renegades’ next action comes this Saturday when they host Edmonton Victoria at 2 p.m. at Great Chief Park.
