The Red Deer Riggers have won five games in a row after an 8-0 win over the Calgary Diamondbacks on Monday.
On the road in Calgary, the Riggers scored one run in the opening inning but piled on six in the top of the fourth to take a commanding lead. They knocked in an additional run in the top of the sixth to take home the victory.
Riggers Derrick Chapman went one for two at the plate scoring twice meanwhile both Josh Edwards and Jason Louis had two RBIs each. Edwards was two for four in the batter’s box and Louis went three for four.
Starting pitcher Kohle Huber threw two hitless innings and struck out one batter before he was swapped out for Davin Gulbransen in the third inning. Gulbransen allowed two hits but struck out two in two innings on the mound.
Anthony Chatwood threw in the fifth inning and allowed no hits. Kai Poffenroth entered out of the bullpen in the sixth inning to pitch the final two innings where he allowed three hits but held them scoreless.
With the win, the Riggers remain in first in the south division with a 12-5 record with just one regular season game remaining. On Tuesday, July 25 Red Deer will host the Calgary Diamondbacks at 7:30 p.m. at Gulls Stadium.
But first, they’ll host their 41st annual Red Deer Riggers baseball tournament this weekend from July 21-23 at Great Chief Park.
The tournament will begin at 7 p.m. with a matchup between the St. Albert Tigers and the CA Hounds followed by a face-off between the Riggers and the Innisfail Hawks at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, the action begins at 11 a.m. but the Riggers play at 2 p.m. against the Hounds and again at 8 p.m. against the Tigers. On Sunday the championship final will be played at 3:30 p.m.
