The Red Deer Riggers couldn’t quite inch all the way back into first at the end of the Sunburst Baseball League season.

Despite a feverish late-season push, in which the Riggers won seven of their last 10, they finished second in the league with an 11-7 record.

The last loss of the season, 3-2 to the Edmonton Confederation Park Cubs Monday, meant the Riggers had to settle for second.

That set up a date with the Sherwood Park Athletics in the first round, who beat Red Deer 14-0 in the final of the Riggers Tournament on Sunday.

Game 1 of the best of three series is set for Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Great Chief Park. Game 2 is Aug. 8 in Sherwood Park and Game 3 if necessary is Aug. 8 back at Great Chief Park.

The top-ranked Cubs will take on the St. Albert Tigers in the first round.
