Proulx to play for Alberta
Defensive back Adam Proulx of the Hunting Hills Lightning was selected to the Northern Alberta U17 football team to compete in the Football Canada Cup.
Both the North and South all-star teams, along with the Alberta U19 team, will compete in the Canada Cup, which is set for July 3-11 in Saskatoon.
Meanwhile, three Red Deer players were named to the Northern Alberta team to compete in the Bantam Bowl, May 18 at Foote Field in Edmonton.
Hunting Hills running back Tim Pratt and Lindsay Thurber defensive backs Greg Fowler and Jayden Taylor were selected to the team. The Senior Bowl will take place May 18 at McMahon Stadium in Edmonton.
Offensive lineman Shane Potter of Hunting Hills and receiver Andrew Jevne of Sylvan Lake are on the north team.
Cheney is triple winner at Plains
SASKATOON — Master instructor Lyle Cheney of the Red Deer Cheney Karate Studios was a triple winner at the 22nd annual Western Plains Martial Arts championships Saturday.
Cheney won the executive black belt forms and sparring titles and the black belt weapons forms.
Nick and Jack Marchuk and Samuel Abijero also won three times.
Nick Marchuk won the 12-13 year-old blue-brown belt sparring and musical forms and was second in the 13-17 year-old weapons forms. He also teamed with Jack Marchuk and Abijero to win the team forms.
Jack Marchuk won the 6-7 year-old white-yellow belt lightweight sparring and forms titles while Abijero captured the six-seven year-old white-yellow belt heavyweight sparring and forms.
Assistant instructor Brian Jewett was second in the executive black belt forms and sparring while assistant instructor Clint Robison took second in the black belt forms and third in the black belt middleweight sparring.
RDC Chiefs nab silver
The Red Deer KFC Chiefs struck silver in the West Edmonton Blues midget A lacrosse tournament during the weekend. The Chiefs dropped a 7-6 decision to the Edmonton Warriors in the final.
John Goranson led the Chiefs with three goals while Eric Reierson, Tucker Dougherty and Connor Hartley added single markers.
The Chiefs were 2-1 in round-robin play, losing 9-6 to the Warriors and beating the St. Albert Rams 6-5 and the West Edmonton Blues 9-7.
Synchro swimmers capture gold
CALGARY — Mackenzie Heist and Ashley Zuidhof captured gold for the Red Deer Synchronized Swim Club at the Wildrose provincial meet during the weekend.
The pair won the tier 5 duet title while Lindsay Barrett, Alisha Hanrahan, Heist, Stephanie Metzger, Tessa Wilson and Zuidhof finished second in the team competition. In individual competition Barrett won the tier 5 figures while Zuidhof was sixth.
In the tier 1 division, Madison Ruest and Heather Turnbull tied for second in the figures while Emily Heidinger, Kate Jensen, Taylor Laing, Heather Mast, Ruest and Turnbull were fifth in the team competition.
