Sutherland second in provincial gymnastics
EDMONTON — Red Deer Exelta Gymnastics Club’s Alix Sutherland finished second in the provincial 5 open women’s division at the Wild Rose international artistic gymnastics invitational during the weekend.
Sutherland won the bars while finishing second on the floor, fifth on the beam and seventh in the vault.
Kayla Boyd was sixth overall after finishing third on the beam, sixth on the floor, seventh on the bars and eighth on the vault.
Erika Pearson placed fourth in the provincial 5 tyro class while winning the floor and taking second on the vault while Hannah Bilsborrow was sixth and Kaelan Hayter seventh in the provincial 4 tyro category.
Bilsborrow was third on the bars, tied with Hayter for sixth on the beam and was seventh on the floor and vault.
Hayter was fourth on the floor and fifth on the bars.
Julia Plain finished 14th in the provincial 4 novice division.
Hunt curls to A title
LETHBRIDGE — Bruce Hunt of the Red Deer Curling Centre won the A event at the Southern Dominion Curling Club championships during the weekend to advance to the provincials to be held in Calgary in October.
Hunt with third Miles Lewis, second Terry Norvila and lead Eldon Raab won the A event with a 7-5 win over a team from Airdrie.
They defeated the Calgary Curling Club 8-1 in the semifinals after beating Lethbridge 4-3, the Calgary Winter Club 6-1 and the Calgary Huntington Hills Club 8-3. Carol Robertson of the Red Deer Curling Centre and Jack Bud of the Michener Hill Curling Club both missed the playoffs.
Robertson, with third Michelle Stanton, second Tracy Thibeault and lead Deb Gill, opened with an 8-2 win over the Oilfield Curling Club before losing 8-5 to the Acadia Rec Centre of Calgary and 8-4 to Lethbridge.
Bud, with third Fred Leszyski, second Jim Drumon and lead Rob Kover, fell 5-1 to Calgary North Hill and 6-2 to Lethbridge.
