Louis takes national title

LETHBRIDGE — Meghan Louis of the Red Deer Exelta Gymnastics Club captured the national open category at the Southern zones and trials to Westerns artistic meet during the weekend.

Louis placed second on the bars, third on vault and fifth on the beam and floor exercise.

She’s one of three members of the Exelta Club to advance to the Western finals to be held April 30-May 3 in Winnipeg.

Alix Sutherland advanced in the provincial 5 open category and Erika Pearson in provincial 5 tyro.

Sutherland placed second overall in her category while winning the floor, finishing second on the beam, tying for fourth on the bars and taking sixth on the vault.

Kayla Boyd was 10th overall after finishing eighth on the vault and ninth on the floor.

Pearson was second in her class. She won the vault, tied for third on the floor and was fifth on the bars and beam.

Three other athletes advanced to the provincial championships to be held April 18-19 in Brooks.

Brooke Antonsen was third in the provincial 2 argo class, Brooke Boyd sixth in the provincial 2 novice division and Summer Anderson fourth in provincial 3 open. Antonsen won the beam, was second on the vault, tied for fourth on the floor and placed eighth on the bars.

Anderson won the floor, was third on the bars and fifth on the vault and beam while Boyd tied for fifth on the vault, tied for seventh on the floor, was eighth on the bars and 10th on the beam.

Kyla Jepson placed sixth on the provincial 5 novice division while taking second on the floor, fifth on the vault and bars and ninth on the beam.

Synchonized Swim Club wins gold at Western Nationals

Meagan Schuster of the Red Deer Synchronized Swim Club won gold in the routine and championship events of the Western Nationals in Nanaimo, B.C., during the weekend.

Red Deer teammate Jessica Johnson, meanwhile, earned a bronze medal in the championship event.

Other members of the Tier 6 Red Deer team competing in the Western Nationals were April Connelly, Lisa Dahlke, Tessa Hubbell and Maggie Jensen.

The Red Deer squad experienced some bad luck in the team competition, placing fourth due to technical difficulties beyond their control.

The duet pairing of Dahlke and Hubbell finished sixth in their competition.
