Cougars, Raiders split rugby twin bill

Lindsay Thurber and Notre Dame split a Central Alberta High School Rugby League twin bill at Titans Park Wednesday.

The LTCHS Raiders won the boys’ contest 48-5 while the Notre Dame Cougars took the girls’ match 12-10.

The boys’ edition of the Raiders held a 34-0 lead at the half.

Ian Mahood led the way with three tries while Karl Hoehne added two and Dallas Snider, James Newman and Steven Holmes one each. Grady Bowd had four converts.

Brett Maximchuk scored a try for the Cougars.

Emma Goertzen and Jenn Peturson scored tries for the LTCHS girls. The Notre Dame scoring was unavailable.

In other girls’ play, the Rimbey Spartans beat the Hunting Hills Lightning 22-12 while in exhibition boys’ action the Lightning downed Drayton Valley 46-0.

Joel Nicholson had three tries, Jamie Boyce two and Jopie Krytzinger, Jeremy Fulcher and Jose Liso one each for the Lightning. Liso added three converts.

It was the first game for Drayton Valley.

White ties for eighth

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Red Deer’s Adrienne White shot a final round one-over par 73 to tie for eighth on the Golf Club of Estrella stop on the women’s Cactus Tour Wednesday.

White finished with a 223 total after a pair of 75s over the first two days.

She finished in a four-way tie, nine strokes back of the winner, and won $125.

She has now pocketed $2,433 in 11 events on the mini-tour this season.

Chiefs chopped by Axemen

The Red Deer KFC Chiefs dropped an 8-5 decision to the Calgary Axemen in midget A lacrosse league play.

Pearce Just, Adam Ferguson, Eric Reierson, Jeremy Danderfer and Spencer Lee scored for the Chiefs. Orrin Farries was in goal.

Games foundation open for applications

The Red Deer Games Foundation is now accepting applications for financial assistance from Red Deer and area athletes.

The Foundation provides grants to individuals demonstrating a high level of ability and strong devotion to their sport. Application forms outlining the guidelines and criteria of the program are available at the City of Red Deer’s Recreation Centre, Collicutt Centre and the Alberta Sport Development Centre. Applications are also available online at www.asdc.ca

The deadline is May 20th.
