Fetaz top female athlete
CAMROSE — Jennifer Fetaz of David Thompson High School was the top female athlete in the CASAA zone track and field championship meet Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the male junior, intermediate and senior aggregate winners were Colin Horan of Ponoka, Dean Sanders of Bentley and David Shantz of Wetaskiwin, respectively.

Braves crush Cubs
Bantam
CALGARY — The Red Deer Servus Credit Union Braves put on their hitting shoes and whipped the Calgary Cubs 15-4 in five innings in bantam AAA baseball league play Tuesday.
Jonah Penner had a single and two triples in four plate appearances while Reign Letkeman, Nathan Damiani and Wyle Cunningham had two hits each.
Cunningham worked one inning on the mound, allowing a pair of runs while striking out three while Letkeman pitched three innings, allowing one run and fanning seven. Penner went the final inning, striking out two.
Rookie
The Northern Lights Testing Tornadoes downed the Advocate 12-9 in Red Deer Rookie Baseball League play Tuesday. Mason Deditch led the Tornadoes with a three-run triple.
Fusion still undefeated
Bantam Girls
The Firefly Fusion improved to 6-0 in league play with a 12-8 win over Glover International/Blue Cross Monday.
Madison Holland and Taylor Stymiest combined for the win, fanning four batters while and scattering six hits. Taylor Hall led the way offensively with two doubles and a single, while Haley Weinrach tripled and singled, Holland and Megan Kirkland each had two hits and and Dominique Adams stroked a triple.
Jade Petrie and Tanisyn Willms cracked triples for Blue Cross, with Ashytyn Glover and Caymen Koivisto each contributing a double and Jessica Amendt going two for three at the plate.
• Glover International took top honours in the consolation event of a weekend B tournament at Sedgewick, downing the Lloydminster Rebels in the final.
The game was decided in extra innings, with game MVP Willms driving in the winning run.
The Red Deer squad was 1-2 in pool play, defeating Lloydminster 7-4 and falling 16-14 to Sedgewick and 14-2 to Red Deer Can Pro.
Peewee Girls
Jordanna Krentz had two hits as the Red Deer Motors Rage downed Stettler 15-4 Monday at Great Chief Park. Rage pitchers Aurora Muriel and Mariah Cawthra-Petrie each recorded two strikeouts. Krentz came on in relief.
Mite Girls
The Red Deer Phantom Doors and Canadian Closet Phantoms mite A team downed the Red Deer squirts C Blue Jays 20-12 Tuesday.
The Phantoms play in a squirts tournament at the Westpark this weekend.
Chiefs roll Rams
Thirteen different players hit the scoresheet as the Red Deer Al-Terra Chiefs downed the St. Albert Rams 19-2 in bantam A lacrosse league play Tuesday. Chase Thudium scored three times with Bobby Hamilton, Ryan Beatson, Logan Fisher and Jordan Steenbergen connecting twice each and Connor Einhorn, Matt Reierson, Jayden Rausch, Trey deGraaf, Colton Woytas, Jordy Potter, Matt Zentner and Taylor Maxwell once apiece. Darrian Banack picked up the win in goal.
Raiders blow out Innisfail
The Lindsay Thurber Raiders downed Innisfail 9-1 in Central Alberta High School Soccer League play Monday. Lucas Naufel, Jordan Aimoe and Haydn McLean scored twice each with singles added by Mojtab Zaher, Sidi Hamud and Denis Casagranda. Derek Layden connected for Innisfail.
Raiders close in on rugby title
The Lindsay Thurber Raiders have won the last eight Central Alberta High School Boys’ Rugby League titles and they’re closing in on another.
The Raiders, who were fourth at the provincials last season, remained undefeated in league play with a 72-3 win over the West Central Rebels of Rocky Mountain House Tuesday and advanced to the zone final on June 3 at Titans Park against either Notre Dame or Hunting Hills.
Ian Mahood led the Raiders with four tries while Ryan Clark added three and Ryan Mannerfelt, Luke Madill, Steven Holmes, Sheldon Nielson and James Newman one each. Grady Bowd had five conversions and Shamarke Salad one.
In other boys’ action, Drew Sutherland scored a try with seven minutes remaining in the game to break a scoreless tie to led the Hunting Hills Lightning to a 10-0 win over the Notre Dame Cougars.
Jose Liso had a convert and a penalty kick to round out the scoring.
On the girls’ side the LTCHS Raiders got two tries each from Breanna Beck and Megan Brouwer and one from Jenn Peturson in a 27-0 win over Rocky. Sam Clutton added a convert for the Raiders, who led 5-0 at the half.
The Raiders will face Notre Dame in the zone final on June 3 for the right to represent Central Alberta at the provincials, June 12-13 at Ellerslie Rugby Park in Edmonton. Notre Dame, who placed third at last year’s provincials, will be looking for their third straight league title.
In exhibition girls’ play Tuesday Hunting Hills and Rimbey tied 10-10. Katie McIver scored both tries for the Lightning.
The Notre Dame tournament runs Friday and Saturday at Titans Park.
On the girls’ side, the Raiders face Sturgeon at 11 a.m. and Beaumont at 1:15 p.m. Friday while Notre Dame takes on Sturgeon at 2 p.m. and Beaumont at 6:30 p.m. Rimbey clashes with Rocky at 12:30 p.m., Harry Ainlay of Edmonton at 3:30 p.m. and Notre Dame of Calgary at 5:45 p.m. Rocky also takes on Lethbridge Collegiate Institute at 2:45 p.m. The boys’ schedule isn’t available.
Bosnian Canadians edge Hornets
The Bosnian Canadians got goals from Pepyn Maas, Merein Van Benthem and Frank Van Oostrom in a 3-2 Central Alberta Men’s Soccer League Tier 1 win over the Ferus Green Hornets. Harvey Von Hollen netted both goals for the Hornets.
In another Tier 1 match, Olds Olympia and the Majoma Vital Royals played to a scoreless tie.
In Tier 2 action, Shane Kilpatrick scored twice and Matt Veldhuis and Braden Sacha also connected as the Griffins toppled UK United 4-1. Steve Metson replied for United.
Meanwhile, the Sunchild First Nation, with Dayton Bull scoring twice, blanked the Hi-LIne Strikers 2-0, and the Old Boyz dumped Red Deer Celtic 4-1. Matt Cole tallied twice for the Old Boyz, who got additional goals from Elbert Beekman and Jeremy Soderberg.
Local golfers make the cut
DEWINTON — Ted Bach of Forest Heights fired a 76 Wednesday and was one of three Central Albertans to make the cut for today’s final round of the 54-hole Alberta Open at Carmoney Golf Club.
Bach’s two-day total of 149 placed him 16 strokes behind second-round leader Ryan Yip of Calgary (68-65—133). Ryan Vallely of Medicine Hat (67-68) and James Love of Calgary (68-67) were tied for second, two shots back of Yip, while first-round leader Wes Heffernan of Calgary (63-73) fell to fourth place with a 136 total.
Chase Teron of the Red Deer G&CC (77-74—151) and Jason Thiels of Olds (77-75—152) were among the 48 players and ties to make the cut.

• Red Deer product and University of Victoria golfer Mitch Evanecz carded a 3-under par 69 Wednesday and was eight shots off the men’s lead heading into today’s third round of the 72-hole Canadian University/College championship at Hamilton.
Evanecz opened with a 79 and had a two-round total of 4-over par 148. Leader Cory Renfrew of the University of British Columbia (UBC) shot 66 Wednesday and sat at 4-under 140.
Meanwhile, Joey Sereda of Red Deer turned in a second consecutive 77, good for a 36-hole total of 154. Sereda attends the U of Alberta.
Former Red Deer resident Jocelyn Alford from UBC was tied for ninth in the women’s division with a 156 total (79-77), seven strokes back of leader Maggie Trainor of Humber College (78-71).
• Todd Fiske and Kyle Morrison of Red Deer River Bend teamed up to shoot 68 in the PGA of Alberta TaylorMade Adidas Tournament of Champions Wednesday at Wolf Creek, earning $411 and $270, respectively, as the pro and amateur.
Kevin Broderson and Tom McKinlay of Lacombe were another shot back and pocketed $411 and $250.
Keith Whitecotton and Randy Baden of the Edmonton Petroleum G&CC won with a 63, picking up $2,200 and $1,000.
