Stettler upsets Sylvan Lake in opener

SYLVAN LAKE — The Stettler Wildcats are already ahead of last year.

The ‘Cats, who posted a 0-7-1 record last season, opened the Central Alberta High School Football League season with an impressive 28-8 victory over the Sylvan Lake Lakers Thursday.

Landon Potter played a major role in the victory as he rushed for 148 yards on 28 carries and scored twice late in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

The Lakers trailed 9-0 early in the final quarter before getting a touchdown from Chris Hayes, on a six-yard pass from Chase Hoffman, and Nathan Tarling added a two-point convert to narrow the gap to 9-8.

However, Potter scored on a six-yard run at 10:18 and on a five-yard romp at 11:15. Wyatt Haustein, who earlier had two punt singles, put the finishing touches on the victory as he gobbled up a fumble and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown with 16 seconds remaining.

Jared Steinwand, on a six-yard run, had the Wildcats other major in the first quarter with Anton Stewart kicking a convert.

Ricky Armstrong had 48 yards rushing on five carries for the ‘Cats while Tarling led the Lakers with 42 yards on eight carries.

Tyler Ledwos grabbed four passes for 66 yards for the Lakers as Hoffman completed seven of 17 attempts for 92 yards.

League action continues today with the Hunting Hills Lightning at the Lacombe Rams at 4:30 p.m., West Central Rebels of Rocky Mountain House visits Wetaskiwin at 7:30 p.m. and Notre Dame meets the Trojans in Camrose at 4:30 p.m.
