Sutter Fund Chiefs advance at Mac’s

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs wrapped up a semifinal playoff berth in the girls’ division of the Mac’s midget AAA hockey tournament with an 11-1 win over the Westman Wildcats of Winnipeg Wednesday.

CALGARY — The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs wrapped up a semifinal playoff berth in the girls’ division of the Mac’s midget AAA hockey tournament with an 11-1 win over the Westman Wildcats of Winnipeg Wednesday.

The Chiefs, 3-0, finish round-robin play today at 3:30 p.m. against the Calgary Bruins (1-1-1) at the Max Bell Arena.

Ashley Graf was red hot, scoring five times and adding two assists while linemates Jade Petrie and Janelle Froehler added a goal and two helpers apiece. Reanna Arnold, Suze Vanderlinde, Emma Malsbury and Morgan Brandl added single markers for the Chiefs, who led 7-1 after two periods. The teams were tied 1-1 after 20 minutes.

Camille Trautman faced just 12 shots in the goal for the Chiefs, who had 27 shots on a pair of Winnipeg netminders.

Meanwhile, the Red Deer Optimist Rebels dropped a 5-4 decision to the Winnipeg Wild to see their pool record drop to 0-2-1, which knocked them out of the playoffs.

Connor Hartley scored twice for the Rebels, who led 2-0 after the first period and trailed 5-3 after 40 minutes. Jared Smith and Nick Glackin added single markers for Red Deer, who finished play today at 11:45 a.m. against the Valley West Hawks at the Flames Arena.

Brenden Mandrusiak started in goal for the Rebels, allowing four goals on 13 shots before giving way to Tanner Jaillet, who stopped 11 of 12 shots. The Rebels managed 24 shots on goal and took nine of 16 minor penalties.

The boys’ quarter-finals and semifinals and girls’ semifinals go Friday with the girls’ final at 10 a.m. and the boys’ finale at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Saddledome.
