Sutter Fund Chiefs fall twice at Midget AAA Provincials

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs had a tough opening day at the Hockey Alberta Midget AAA Female Provincials.

After opening the tournament with a loss to St. Albert, they fell 4-1 to the Lloydminster Steelers.

Lloydminster opened the scoring in the first, added a pair in the second and scored once more in the third.

Emily Straw buried for Red Deer with only 2:02 left in the third. Kallie Clouston and Emma Hebert drew assists.

Red Deer opened provincials against the two-time provincial champion St. Albert Slash and struggled Friday.

Tied 1-1 after 40 minutes, St. Albert exploded for four goals in the final frame to earn the 5-1 victory.

Aryn Chambers had the lone Chiefs goal.

Minor Midget AAA

The Red Deer North Star Chiefs have a tie and two losses in three games at the Minor Midget AAA Provincials in Edmonton.

They earned their first point of the week Friday morning in a 3-3 tie with the St. Albert Flyers. Foxx Doell had a pair of goals and Reed Sparrow added the other. They opened the tournament with a 3-0 loss to the Leduc Oil Kings, then dropped a 5-4 game to the NW Calgary Bruins Thursday. Lethbridge also topped the Chiefs 4-1 Thursday.

In their second game of the day, Red Deer dropped a tight 3-2 contest against the SSAC Edmonton Bulldogs. Ryan Datema and Aden Michael had goals for Red Deer in the loss.

Midget B

The Lacombe Rockets kicked off provincials in Calgary with a win Friday. They cruised past the Foothills Flyers 7-2. Brady McKinlay had a big game with two goals and five points, while Jaden Etson also chipped in a hat trick. Owen McKinlay also had a pair of tallies in the win.

Later in the day, Lacombe routed the Hughenden Jets 10-4. Owen McKinlay had a four-point night and five other Rockets had three-point games (Etson, Brady McKinlay, Peter Suominen, Jackson Pilote and Tyler Beierbach). Suominen and Etson had hat tricks in the victory.

Peewee Female A

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Peewee Female A got off to a strong start at provincials in Olds. They edged the host Grizzlys 8-3 Friday and got a pair of goals from Raya Hastings. Six other players hit the score sheet with goals, including Presley Zinger, Jayde Sansregret, Malia Tetreault, Ava Burghardt, Kamryn Lane and Devon McConnell.

Red Deer won its second game of the day 3-1 over Okotoks. Bailey Frose, Sansregret and Tetreault had goals in the victory. Rayna Lennie had 22 saves for Red Deer.

Olds lost its second game of tournament 8-3 to Medicine Hat Friday.
