The Hockey Alberta Midget AAA Female Provincials got off to a tough start for the host team on Friday in Red Deer.

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs fell 3-2 in overtime to the St. Albert Slash in the tournament opener at Servus Arena.

Madison Willan notched the OT winner for the Slash at 15:51 of the extra frame to score the victory for the visitors.

Red Deer started the game off with the opening goal at 13;45 of the first when Alayna Wagstaff struck on the power play. Madison Rutz helped the home side jump out to a 2-0 lead midway through the second, but the Slash scored late in the frame to cut the deficit.

Mckenzie Hewett scored her second goal of the afternoon with just under three minutes to play in regulation to force overtime.

The Sutter Fund Chiefs will be back on the ice tonight at 6 p.m. at the Servus Arena when they square off with the Rocky Mountain Raiders.
