Swartz and Oguchi named RDP Athletes of the Week

Pair player soccer for RDP Queens and Kings

A pair of Red Deer Polytechnic first-year students were recognized for their recent performances.

Queens soccer player Jenica Swartz and Kings Soccer player Wataru Oguchi were named RDP Athletes of the Week on Tuesday.

Swartz delivered an efficient and productive performance in the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team’s 5-0 victory against the visiting Olds College Broncos this past Sunday. In only 45 minutes played, the first-year forward had four shots on goal, accumulating two goals and one assist. The Bachelor of Science Pre-Professional – Medicine student pushed the pace and constantly pressured the Broncos’ back four. For her outstanding effort, Swartz was named the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game. The talented student-athlete also competes on the Red Deer Polytechnic Cross Country Running team.

Frequently, offensive players receive the most recognition, but Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer defender Wataru Oguchi made significant contributions in his team’s win and tie against the Olds College Broncos this past weekend. The first-year was rock solid and played sound positionally, helping the Kings to limit the Broncos to only one goal over two games. The tenacious student-athlete from Japan displayed a tremendous work ethic, playing the entire 90 minutes in both Saturday and Sunday’s games. Oguchi, an Academic Upgrading student, also helped effectively transition the ball up the field to give his teammates an opportunity to ignite their high powered offence, which scored six goals over two games. Oguchi’s consistent play was praised by Kings coaches, and he has made an impact as a positive and admired member of the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer program in a short amount of time.
