Gulls 5

Dawgs 10

The Sylvan Lake Gulls now face elimination after dropping Game 1 of the WCBL West Finals.

On Friday night at Seaman Stadium in Okotoks, the Dawgs beat the Gulls 10-5 to lead the series.

Game 2 in Sylvan Lake on Saturday is now a must-win for the Gulls at 7:05 p.m. If they are victorious, Game 3 will be back in Okotoks on Sunday.

To begin the matchup both teams saw success at the plate in the first inning.

The Gulls were up first when Tyler McWillie hit a solo home run followed by Carson Coffield scoring an unearned run to lead 2-0.

The Dawgs answered in the bottom half when Alejandro Cazorla gave them their first lead with a grand-slam home run.

In the bottom of the second, the Dawgs extended their lead 6-2 with their second home run of the game.

The Gulls added their third run in the top of the third inning when McWillie batted in another run off a double.

However, the Dawgs took over scoring a combined four runs in the next two innings to take a commanding 10-3 lead.

That was all the Dawgs needed to secure the victory despite the Gulls making a push in the ninth inning.

With a runner in scoring position shortstop Jonah Weisner brought in a run with a single to the outfield. Shortly after with the bases loaded, Cleary Simpson forced a walk to add the Gulls’ fifth run.

Gulls starting pitcher Carson Angeroth struggled on the mound allowing six runs off six hits in just two and one-third innings.

Hagen Barcello allowed four runs on four hits in relief and was replaced by Jared Arnold after two and two third innings. Arnold pitched just two innings but held the Dawgs scoreless and struck out two batters.

Cole Huebner took over in the eighth inning and made quick work but also recorded a strikeout.
