Sylvan Lake Gulls fans still have approximately five months until their favourite Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) team takes the field but it can’t come soon enough.
Last week the WCBL announced opening day will be on May 25th in an all-Saskatchewan duel between the Regina Red Sox and Weyburn Beavers.
However, the Gulls won’t have to wait much longer. Beginning on Friday, May 26 they will take on the Fort McMurray Giants at Gulls’ field for the first of a three-game slate that continues through Saturday and Sunday. It will be the first time the two teams meet since the Gulls knocked out the Giants in the postseason last summer.
Sylvan Lake will then play defending champion Okotoks Dawgs on Tuesday, June 30 before playing a trio of games against them on June 2, 3, and 4 on the weekend.
Each team is set to host 28 home dates and play 56 games this summer.
On July 15th, the best players from the WCBL will gather once again at Seaman Stadium in Okotoks for the 2023 WCBL All-Star Game and Home Run Derby.
Playoffs will begin on Monday, Aug. 7 and the championship series will take place on Aug. 15. The second game will be on Aug. 16 with a third if needed matchup on Aug. 17. Each playoff series will be a best-of-three.
