Gulls 3 Bulls 2
It wasn’t the most flashy way to walk off a baseball game but the Sylvan Lake Gulls got the job done on Wednesday.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Gulls Nick Groves was hit by a pitch to advance to first base scoring the runner on third to win 3-2 at Gulls Stadium.
With the victory the Gulls have won three consecutive games and remain in second place in the Western Canadian Baseball League’s West Division with a 20-9 record.
The Bulls got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning when Torrin Vaselenak hammered a solo shot over the fence.
The Gulls answered in the bottom of the sixth inning when outfielder Shea Bowen, despite getting out, knocked in a run in the process.
Lethbridge reclaimed their lead in the top of the eighth scoring an unearned error by the pitcher.
However, in the bottom of the eighth, Bowen came up clutch once again cashing in his second RBI of the game to tie the game 2-2.
That led to Groves’ late-game heroics to lift the home team to their third straight victory.
Gulls starting pitcher Kyle Froehlich had a fantastic performance striking out seven batters in six innings on the mound. He allowed only three hits and one run before Hagan Barcello entered the game in relief in the seventh inning.
Barcello held the Bulls to just three hits before the Gulls called on Ty Boudreau in the eighth inning to close the game out.
In the final two innings, Boudreau gave up a run but struck out three batters to seal the deal.
Next up for the Gulls is a matchup in Brooks against the Bombers on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. They’ll then return home on Friday to rematch the Bombers at Gulls Stadium at 7:05 p.m.
