Temple wins Alberta Mid-amateur in a playoff

PONOKA — Kevin Temple of Calgary Country Hills parred the second extra hole to defeat Frank Van Dornick of Camrose in a playoff to decide the Alberta Men’s Mid Amateur championship Thursday at the Ponoka Community Golf Club.

Temple, the 2007 champion, and Van Dornick, a two-time winner of the event, were tied after 54 holes of regulation play with six-over totals of 219. Temple carded a final-round 76 Thursday, while Van Dornick checked in with a 74.

Frank Mackenzie of Edmonton Glendale, who led after each of the first two rounds with back-to-back 70s, struggled to an 80 in the final round and had to settle for a third-place tie with Senan Foley of Calgary Elbow Springs (76-76-68) at 220.

Mackenzie, however, defeated Foley in a playoff to determine the third spot on the Alberta team that will compete in the Canadian Men’s Mid Amateur Championship Aug. 17-20 at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club.

Greg Gigliuk of Red Deer, who plays out of Lacombe, was the low Central Albertan at 224 (73-75-76) and tied for ninth, while Tom Skinner of the Red Deer Golf and Country Club (RDG&CC) tied for 11th with a total of 225 with scores of 75-72-78.

Merv Dusyk of the RDG&CC finished in a 17th-place tie at 227 (75-76-76), while Keith Newton of Olds (77-76-76) was another stroke back and tied for 19th and Aro Dudley of the host club tied for 39th at 234 (76-78-80).

Rounding out the list of Central Alberta golfers who made the 36-hole cut were Dean Bracken of Olds (75-82-79—236), Pete Duncan (81-78-78—237) and Grant Lee (81-76-81—238) of the RDG&CC, and Tom McKinlay Sr. of Lacombe (85-75-85—245).

Wade Thurber of Olds withdrew prior to the final round.
