Thiels takes Olds junior golf event

Jason Thiels of the host club turned in a 2-under 70 Tuesday to take top honours in a McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour event.

OLDS — Jason Thiels of the host club turned in a 2-under 70 Tuesday to take top honours in a McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour event.

The Olds golfer mixed in four birdies with two bogeys to finish two shots clear of Brett Pasula of Edmonton Glendale. Spencer Dorowicz of the host club tied for 10th with a 77.

Thiels qualified for the tour championship event Aug. 30 at Wolf Creek, as did Logan Hill of Red Deer River Bend, who shot a 79 and tied for third in the category for boys 14 and under.

Kaleb Denham of Innisfail, who won Monday’s McLennan Ross Sun tournament on his home course, was also tied for third in the 14 and under division, as was Michael Pruss of River Bend.

Eric DeWit of the Red Deer Golf and Country Club and Connor Ablett of Three Hills each carded a 79 to tied for sixth in the division for boys 17 to 19 years of age.

Innisfail’s Cara Vanderham finished third in the girls division with a 79, five strokes behind winner Sydney MacDonald of Calgary Earl Grey.
