Winterhawks forward Cody Glass was named WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending March 4. Glass, the first-ever draft selection in franchise history by the Vegas Golden Knights after being chosen sixth overall at the 2017 NHL Draft, registered 10 points (5G-5A) in four games this week.

In Tuesday’s 9-0 win over the Tri-City Americans, Glass tallied a goal and an assist, repeating the same performance Friday at home in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Seattle Thunderbirds. Friday, he earned second star of the game honours. Saturday, the Winterhawks continued their dominance of the Americans in a 5-0 win, with Glass scoring two goals to capture first star honours for the game.

Sunday, Glass recorded a goal and four points as the Winterhawks struck back against the Thunderbirds in a 7-4 result, earning Glass third star honours for the game.

Glass was originally drafted by the Winterhawks in the first round, 19th overall, of the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, Glass continues to lead the Winterhawks this season with 89 points (34G-55A) and a plus-37 rating in 57 games The 6-foot-2, 177-pound product of Winnipeg, Man. has played in 194 career WHL regular season games, recording 210 points (76G-134A), including 26 power-play goals, two short-handed goals and 10 game-winning goals.

WHL Goalie of the Week

Portland Winterhawks goaltender Shane Farkas was named WHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending March 4. Farkas posted three wins, a 1.33 goals-against-average, .961 save percentage and two shutouts this week.

Tuesday against the Tri-City Americans, Farkas stopped all 37 shots in a 9-0 win, earning second star of the game honours. Saturday, he once again silenced the Americans, stopping 30 shots in a 5-0 win, earning second star honours of the night across the WHL.

Farkas closed out his impressive week with a 32-save performance in a 7-4 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds Sunday. The win improved Farkas’ winning streak to eight games, having not taken a loss since Jan. 27 against the Kamloops Blazers.

In those eight games, Farkas has compiled a 1.57 GAA and .947 SV% as well as the two aforementioned shutouts and perfect 8-0-0-0 record.

Originally selected by the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the fourth round, 67th overall, of the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, Farkas is in his second season with the Winterhawks. The 6-foot-2, 177-pound product of Penticton, B.C. has appeared in 32 career WHL regular season games, compiling a 17-11-0-0 record, 3.25 GAA, .901 SV% and three shutouts.

Where are they Now?

Luke Philip was acquired by the Red Deer Rebels from the Kootenay Ice in advance of the trade deadline in 2016. The five-foot-1o, 181-pound centre notched 16 points in 17 regular season games and another 13 in 17 playoff games that year.

The Camrose, Alta., native graduated from the WHL and joined the Alberta Golden Bears where he’s thrived in two seasons. In his first campaign, he had 18 points in 26 games.

This season, as a sophomore, Philip, 22, scored 11 goals and added 29 assists for the Golden Bears. His numbers on the season earned him the Dave Sweeney Schriner Trophy as the Canada West’s top scorer.

He was one of just six players in Canada to score 40 or more points this season. He’s the first Golden Bear to win the award since 2014-2015 and is now in the running for the U Sports Player of the Year award.

Former WHLers win Canada West with Alberta Golden Bears

The Alberta Golden Bears swept Canada West Men’s Hockey Championship last weekend over the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Bears won in game 2, 5-1 to secure the 27th title in the program’s history.

Canada West Defenceman of the Year and former Spokane Chief Jason Fram scored twice in the first period, while Cole Sanford, Stephane Legault, and Jamie Crooks also scored for Alberta.

Red Deer native Graeme Craig is a defenceman for the Golden Bears and Luke Philip played one season with the Rebels.

Both Alberta and Saskatchewan now head to Fredericton, N.B., in two weeks for the 2018 U SPORTS University Cup, hosted by the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds.
