TORONTO — The Saskatchewan Roughriders came close to sweeping the CFL player of the week awards Tuesday.
Defensive end Stevie Baggs was named defensive player of the week after helping the Riders to a 44-44 tie with Calgary on Saturday. Wide receiver/kick returner Jason Armstead took the special teams nod and slotback Andy Fantuz was named top Canadian.
Riders quarterback Darian Durant was a runner-up for the offensive player of the week award, which went to Hamilton pivot Kevin Glenn.
Baggs recorded seven tackles, including two sacks, and forced a fumble in the tie. Linebacker Chip Cox of the Montreal Alouettes was runner-up.
Armstead had five kick returns for 145 yards and added four punt returns for 25 yards. Edmonton Eskimos fullback Mathieu Bertrand was also considered.
Fantuz, a unanimous pick, had 10 catches for 149 yards and a touchdown. His TD came in the final minute of regulation and set up the game-tying two-point conversion.
Glenn connected on 29 of 44 passes for 506 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-38 loss to Montreal. He became the first player to throw for over 500 yards in a game since Jason Maas threw for 540 yards in 2004 with Edmonton.
