Hockey Alberta has announced their shortlist of 32 players hoping to land a spot on Team Alberta’s U16 male squad at the upcoming WHL Cup.

Those included in the shortlist were selected because of their play in previous Team Alberta programs as well as at the summer camp held in Red Deer from July 3-9.

During the camp, 80 players were invited from across Alberta and went through numerous on-ice and off-ice sessions.

“Alberta has a lot of talented players in this age group, we saw it at the Alberta Cup and we saw it at summer camp,” said James Poole, head coach of Team Alberta Under-16 Male in a media release.

“We’re constructing a team that can compete at an elite level in short-term competition, the decisions don’t get easier and now it’s up to these 32 players to show us why they belong in the jersey.”

Of those 80 players at the camp, seven were from central Alberta.

After it was cut down to 32 only three of those seven players from the area made it onto the shortlist including Red Deer’s Dallin Antos, Olds’ Dermot Johnston, and Lacombe’s Daxon Rudolph.

The players who made the shortlist will now be evaluated while playing for their respective clubs and the final roster will be set before the start of the 2023 WHL Cup from October 17-22 in Red Deer.
